As spring comes around, so do spring sports. Tennis is a very popular sport at Hughson High, and Mia Mateo is a varsity player on the tennis team. Mia is a sophomore and a student athlete who is also doing dual enrollment at MJC.
Mia expresses that she is excited for this season because, “I get to play singles.” When questioned about her goals for her second season at Hughson High School, she said, “To make it to TVL and possibly sections.”
In being a student athlete, it can be hard to manage and balance school and sports, so when Mia was asked what the hardest part about being a student athlete was, she said, “Mostly just managing between school, practices and matches, personal life, and needs.” Besides the constant balance between school and sports, along with other activities, she said that her favorite thing about being on this team was, “Getting to hang out with the team and get food after the matches.”
Betty Connors is also a player on the Hughson High School tennis team, and when she was asked about how it is being on the team with Mia, she said, “Mia is one of my really good friends, so it is really fun being on a team with her.” She also expressed her respect to Mia and said, “I really admire how she keeps herself in the game and she doesn’t get in her head. I also think that it is really kind how she supports her teammates and cheers them on during their matches.”
