Life of a Husky Leadership is both a club and a class here at Hughson High. It is also commonly referred to as leadership, or LOH for short. LOH, as explained by teacher of the class, Ms. Brazil, is about “teaching students to perform at their optimal level in whatever extracurricular they participate in.” Between the club and class, there are differences, as explained by Alejandro Calderon, a student enrolled in LOH.
He said that people who get accepted into the class come up with all the ideas and execution of the events and fundraisers they do; people who sign up for the club get to participate in the events and fundraisers and help, but don’t really have a say in the ideas. According to Ms. Brazil, she created LOH in 2014 and gained inspiration from a prior class known as ASB. She stated she had “taught the ASB class for a long time and I saw what teaching leadership skills brought to students and I wanted to bring it to a broader section of our student body. That is how LOH was born.”
Not just anybody can join LOH Leadership. Ms. Brazil said students are usually recommended by “peers, coaches, or teachers,” which entails an application and interview process. Alejandro described some of the requirements of being a part of LOH, those being maintaining good grades, exemplifying leadership, and also signing a code of conduct which comes after being accepted in.
From a student perspective, Alejandro explains the interview questions were “based on why we want to be in LOH, and it basically was just to gauge what the best way to lead is. To get insight from each student and see if they are actually eligible for LOH.” From the interviewers perspective, Ms. Brazil clarifies they “interview people to see why they want to be in the class, to see how they interact with peers, and what they think leadership means.”
People within LOH learn about many different things pertaining to quality of life. Ms. Brazil talks about how students in LOH are taught to live clean, healthy lifestyles – which includes nutrition and sleep – being drug free, and they teach students how to communicate effectively with their peers. LOH also works on many specific projects and events at Hughson High. The Freshman Conference we had three weeks ago was orchestrated by Leadership. Welcome to the Pack is another we are getting set up so we can introduce Freshmen to the school and let them know what to expect, and how to get through high school.
