Kindness Week has become a very important part of our school. It offers students and staff a meaningful opportunity to pause and reflect, connect with one another, and celebrate the positivity on campus. This week stands out as a chance to show empathy, inclusivity, and community to everyone. It encourages all of us to be a little nicer because you never know what’s going on in someone’s life. Even the smallest gestures can make a big difference. As Karalee Ruelas said, “Kindness Week is a week where we celebrate one another and also acknowledge those who exude kindness.”
This year’s activities helped engage students and spread positivity throughout campus. On Monday, students created friendship bracelets to give to one another. Tuesday featured rock painting, where students decorated rocks with encouraging messages. On Wednesday, students wrote heartfelt notes to teachers, expressing appreciation and offering words of encouragement. Thursday’s activity involved a “Take What You Need” poster, filled with envelopes labeled with words like “confidence,” “a compliment,” and “motivation.” Students were encouraged to take whatever message they needed that day. Finally, on Friday, each teacher received three yellow helium balloons to give to the three students they felt embodied kindness. By the end of the day, nearly 100 balloons were “walking” around campus held by students who had been recognized.
When asked how students benefit from Kindness Week, Karalee Ruelas said, “I think that this week is a good reminder to all of us to be kind and take a moment to reach out and smile at someone or say hello. It is sometimes the smallest acts of kindness that can have the most profound impacts. We never know what our kindness might mean to another.”
It was a great turnout this year, with many students engaged, dressing up, and participating in the daily activities. We hope to continue making Hughson High School an even kinder environment.
